History

2020

On June 26, 2020, an update to Synthesizer V Studio for GENBU was announced on the Dreamtonics Co., Ltd. livestream with a July release. On July 15, GENBU's complete voice database was released for Synthesizer V Studio. Options for a bundle with the Synthesizer V Studio engine were offered on ANiCUTE to members only. On July 30, GENBU received a Lite voice database, which was a free version that was ideal for trying him out.

On October 30, AH-Software Co. Ltd. announced in a press release that GENBU would be made available for Japanese users soon.

2021

On January 21, 2021, GENBU was officially made available on AH-Software's AHS Store as digital copies. They also gave him his own character page and a new key visual.

On May 5, a doujinshi circle known as VirVox Project, operating under the permission of VOLOR, released the full image of GENBU previously used by AH-Software Co. Ltd. for his product page. The image revealed that GENBU appeared to be an alias and that his actual name was Kurono Takehiro (玄野武宏). He was planned to be part of VirVox Project's male voice synthesis character-centric group.

On August 1, VirVox Project announced that a crowdfund campaign for GENBU's Synthesizer V AI voice database would be launched in Mid-August. When asked if it was possible for overseas fans to participate, VirVox Project confirmed that the chosen crowdfunding site allowed overseas support, though also noted that because delivery prices were costly, tiers focusing on digital content were planned. However, this did not dismiss the idea of physical goods for overseas users entirely as VirVox Project was still considering which service to use. They mentioned FedEx, EMS, or partnerships with overseas companies as potential options.

On August 7, VirVox Project noted that due to circumstances, the announcement regarding the details about the crowdfunding would be postponed. It was later noted that there was a discrepancy in the final stage of the crowdfunding adjustments, which VirVox confirmed that they decided to start readjustments once again, hence postponing the date. They noted they would do their best to resolve the issue as soon as possible. VOLOR also noted that they would be working with VirVox to resolve the issue.

On August 22, VirVox Project uploaded a press release in regards to the crowdfund for the AI voice database. The organization noted that they were trying to obtain the necessary permissions through a third party, but there were discrepancies with the latter who requested the proper consents. This led to a misunderstanding that VirVox Project obtained the required permissions, thus making the announcements for the crowdfund event. After the announcement, they learned that they did not have the proper consent, leading them to later announce that the crowdfund would be postponed. As there were ongoing discussions between VirVox Project and the third-party organization, it was decided not to pursue a crowdfund for GENBU's AI voice database. It is currently unknown if GENBU was still planned for an AI voice database for Synthesizer V Studio.

2025

On or around June 5, 2025, ANiCUTE's website, the main online purchase venue for GENBU Standard (as well as the exclusive store for fellow Animen vocals AiKO Standard and Eleanor Forte AI), was closed and taken offline, leaving users with the inability to purchase any of them from there. No official statement by VOLOR (whose last official Twitter activity, a retweet of Eleanor Forte congratulating AiKO's eleventh anniversary, was logged back on November 19, 2023) or Animen was made to explain whether this was a temporary or permanent discontinuation of sales, in light of Synthesizer V Studio version 1 being retired by Dreamtonics Co., Ltd. in favor of Synthesizer V Studio 2 back on March 21. Even though GENBU could still be bought from the AHS Store (as well as other Japanese stores like DLsite and SONICWIRE), ANiCUTE's closure led Dreamtonics to remove the "Start Trial" and "Buy Now" buttons from his listing (as well as those for Eleanor AI and AiKO) on My Dreamtonics (the website set up by Dreamtonics for users to register the activation codes for their purchased SVS1 and SVS2 voice databases before using them on the new engine) near the end of June, citing that such "action has been taken following confirmation that our partner has discontinued sales"; this prevented users from trialing him on the new Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro editor since then.

Usage on Synthesizer V Studio 2

For continued usage of GENBU Standard on the new Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro editor, Dreamtonics had prepared an SVS2-compatible version of GENBU, technically an AI voice database trained from songs performed by the original SVS1 Standard voice database (similar in concept to a Synthesizer V Plus database). This allows GENBU Standard to remain compatible with the new engine; however, he does not have access to the Vocal Mode function and does not support Korean Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis or any other Synthesizer V Studio 2-exclusive features, rendering the database similar to that of a first-generation Synthesizer V Studio vocal imported into the new engine. It was made available for download on March 21, 2025, exclusively to owners of the SVS1 version of GENBU Standard who registered their activation codes on the My Dreamtonics website.

GENBU retains around the same sound as his original Synthesizer V voice database release. He has a calm and soothing voice. According to AH-Software, GENBU is noted to have a powerful treble, while the bass is more sweet and gentle. Dynamic singing expression is possible with his voice.

Vocal traits as noted:

• By using a group of soft falsetto phonemes together, GENBU can sing with a more nuanced expression.
• The recommended tempo was not included on the product pages nor database. VirVox Project gave an estimate in September 2021 and noted that it also depended on tuning.

This is a Synthesizer V Studio 2-compatible version of GENBU, a masculine vocal with Synthesizer V 2 AI training based upon the Standard version from Synthesizer V Studio, equivalent in concept to a Synthesizer V Plus voice database.

Vocal traits as noted:

• The traits may remain similar to his Synthesizer V Studio voice database, which includes his calm and soothing voice.
• GENBU is able to sing more realistically through changes in volume and breath, further enriching singing details, making each singing unique, and providing creators with more options. Through this mode, he can use AI Retakes to create multiple "takes" of a sung section to find an ideal vocal without the need for "laborious tuning". This feature is only available in the Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro Editor.
