History[]

2023[]

On May 31, 2023, Dreamtonics Co., Ltd. posted a poem on bilibili along with an announcement that a new song was expected for June 1 at 17:00 GMT+8.[1][2] The following day, Dreamtonics announced the development of two new voice databases, a male and female pair known as Lin Lai and Yun Quan. Both vocals shared one demo and were both created with the impression of, and were voiced by, children, their debuts coinciding with Children's Day. The release date was not yet known but was said to be soon.[3]

Lin Lai was released simultaneously on Dreamtonics' Taobao and WeChat Mini Program on June 17.[4] From then until July 1, Lin Lai and Yun Quan would be available at a discounted price via Taobao and WeChat. Individually, their discounted price was set to 479 yuan compared to the regular 599 yuan. For their own bundles with the Synthesizer V Studio Pro editor, the discount price was set to 899 yuan compared to the regular 999 yuan. Unlike previous Dreamtonics vocals, they could also be purchased as a dual pack at a discounted price of 899 yuan compared to the regular 999 yuan, but this pack only included the two voice databases, not the Pro editor. It was also noted that upon release, Lin Lai and Yun Quan would only be compatible with Synthesizer V Studio version 1.8.0, meaning that they could not be used with the beta versions of 1.9.0, thus until 1.9.0 was released, they could not use the new rap function and were unable to sing in Cantonese Chinese with the Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis feature.[5][6]

Lin Lai and Yun Quan were made available to international customers on October 26.

2024[]

On November 14, 2024, Lin Lai, along with Xuan Yu, Cong Zheng, Yun Quan, Yi Xi, and Cantonese Chinese vocal Ling Wan, were added to AH-Software Co. Ltd.'s AHS Store,[7] thus allowing Japanese customers to purchase him without resorting to proxy services (like ParcelUp, which are required for most users from outside mainland China to buy Taobao products).

Updates[]

Lin Lai AI v101 - June 21 2023[8][9]
A free update for Lin Lai was released following the Synthesizer V Studio 1.9.0 update. This implemented the new rap feature available for the English and Mandarin languages. Cantonese Chinese was added to the Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis feature as well as general improvements to the overall function, resulting in more accurate pronunciation that sounds closer to a native speaker when singing foreign words.
Lin Lai AI v102b1 - August 2, 2023[10][11][12]
A free update for Lin Lai was released following the Synthesizer V Studio 1.10.0b1 update. This enhanced pitch generation by utilizing Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), translating to fewer off-key errors, making better use of vibrato, and creating more expressive transitions between notes. This also allowed for the use of the new "Enhancement" slider in the AI Retakes panel, which controlled the level of changes introduced by RLHF. For Synthesizer V Studio Pro users, feedback submission was enabled, allowing users to consensually share their preferred takes with only Dreamtonics for research and development purposes, where models trained with this feedback would be deployed in future voice database updates. Users may also opt out of this feature if undesired.
Lin Lai AI v102b2 - September 28, 2023[13][14]
A free update for Lin Lai was released following the Synthesizer V Studio 1.10.0b2 update, which was the second beta version following version 1.10.0b1 that introduced enhancements to voice databases and integrated the latest user feedback via Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). Regarding the editor, numerous reported issues were addressed for a more fluid experience. A new generation of pitch models were trained using the extensive feedback from users over the past month, and the new models offered greater accuracy in voice timbre reproduction, as well as a reduction in mispronunciations. Dreamtonics also focused on issues from the previous beta release that made Vocal Modes seem less distinct on certain vocals, ensuring clearer differentiation in the 1.10.0b2 update. The latest update also introduced a new feature in the Note Properties Panel that allowed for even division of a note into multiple syllables, proving to be a useful tool for songs with faster tempos.
Lin Lai AI v102 - October 19, 2023[15]
Final version update compatible for Synthesizer V Studio 1.10.0 which enables Lin Lai to use Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) as well as other enhancements (as listed in v102b1 and v102b2's notes) if the beta version was not installed previously.
Lin Lai AI v103 - October 26, 2023
A free update for Lin Lai was released that added support for the Japanese language to the rap feature.
Lin Lai AI v104b1 - December 18, 2023[16]
A free update for Lin Lai was released following the Synthesizer V Studio 1.11.0b2 update. This implemented support for the Spanish language in the Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis feature.
Lin Lai AI v104 - April 4, 2024[17]
Final version update compatible for Synthesizer V Studio 1.11.0 which enables Lin Lai to sing in Spanish through Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis if the beta version was not installed previously.

Retirement[]

Lin Lai was discontinued by Dreamtonics on March 21, 2025 with the release of Synthesizer V Studio 2 and Lin Lai 2. As of March 23, several Japanese online stores like the AHS Store, DLsite, and SONICWIRE still sell the original Lin Lai voice database, but stock may be limited.

Package details as noted:
Lin Lai is a masculine Mandarin Chinese voice database created with the impression of, and was confirmed to be voiced by, a young boy. As expected of an AI voice database, Lin Lai is capable of singing with a more human-like and realistic voice. He was created with the impression of child singers, aiming to provide creators with a voice that matched the style of children's songs.

Vocal traits as noted:
  • Lin Lai's tone was described to carry a youthful, brave, and confident sound with a unique touch of a childlike tone. However, he does not quite lose the depth and resonance that's expected of male voices. He can provide a sunny and vibrant atmosphere in children's songs.
  • Lin Lai's voice was also described to be lively and bright.
  • With Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPM), Lin Lai can sing more realistically through changes in volume and breath, further enriching singing details, making each singing unique, and providing creators with more options. Through this mode, he can use AI Retakes to create multiple "takes" of a sung section to find an ideal vocal without the need for "laborious tuning". This feature is only available in the Synthesizer V Studio Pro and Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro editors.

Phonetic notes as noted:
  • Phoneme format: X-SAMPA
  • Through Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis, Lin Lai can sing in not only Mandarin Chinese but also in English and Japanese. Since the release of his v101 update on June 21, 2023, he can also sing in Cantonese Chinese with this feature; since his v104b1 update on December 18, he can also sing in Spanish with this feature. Cross-lingual Singing Synthesis is only available in the Synthesizer V Studio Pro and Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro editors.

Vocal Modes as noted (Synthesizer V Studio Pro and Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro editors only):
  • Lin Lai comes with four variations within the Vocal Mode function:
    • "Gentle"
    • "Unadorned"
    • "Lively"
    • "Bright"

System requirements as noted:
  • OS: Microsoft Windows 11 / 10 (64 bit) and up; macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and up; Ubuntu 20.04 (64 bit) and up.[21]
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 or higher, or equivalent AMD processor; Apple Silicon M1 or higher.
    • For high-quality editing of AI audio: Intel Core series 4th generation i5 or higher is recommended, or AMD Athlon X4 845 or higher, including Ryzen series.
