History[]

Tsuina-chan resulted from a member of the "Hinomoto Oniko Project," Saki Ohenri, wanting to create a "rival" character to Oniko - as Oniko is a ogre, Tsuina-chan was conceptualized as an ogre hunter. Tsuina-chan made her official online debut on Ohenri's Pixiv on February 3, 2011 (the initial upload was since deleted). Her character is inspired by the "Tsuina" Event, which is an annual ceremony performed on December 30 each year. It is a ceremony designed to exorcise ogres and bad spirits, which was the basis of Tsuina-chan's character. Elements of the ceremony (instruments, wooden masks, traditional clothing) were all part of her character design. Since then, she had a voice drama series, "Tsuina, the Ogre Hunter", since August 2016. Tsuina-chan later had a crowdfunding campaign to become a VOICEROID in February 2019,[1] and she successfully became a VOICEROID2 product in November that year.

2020[]

On September 14, 2020, Tsuina-chan launched a contest for fans to design an outfit for if she were to become a singing synthesizer.[2] The contest was set to last until November 14. Less than a month later, on October 5, Tsuina-chan's official Twitter account confirmed that she would be starting a crowdfunding campaign for a singing synthesizer later in winter.[3] On October 30, Synthesizer V AI was announced and it was revealed that Tsuina-chan would begin a crowdfunding campaign for Synthesizer V Studio Standard and Synthesizer V AI voice databases later that year.[4][5] The campaign began on December 4 and reached its initial goal of 5,000,000 yen in one day.[6][7]

On December 6, the results of the design contest were revealed with the winning design concept illustrated by Twitter user ゆゆのすけ (@51714_yuriyuri).[8] Runner-ups were also announced for various awards including the: AHS Excellence Award[9], Mai Kadowaki Excellence Award[10], Feeling of Dynamism Award[11], Lovely Poster Award[12], Kouhaku Maruko Kobayashi Award[13], Tsuina-chan Meme Material Contest Award[14], and the Koufudaiji Temple Award[15].

By December 26, the crowdfunding campaign exceeded its 10,000,000 yen stretch goal for the development of a Synthesizer V AI voice database for Tsuina-chan. Additional stretch goals were added for each increment of 1,000,000 yen for the creation of new 3D models and additional voice recordings.[16] She was expected to release toward the end of 2021.[17]

2021[]

On April 22, 2021, in response to a fan's question regarding Lite versions, Tsuina-chan's Twitter replied that it was a possibility.[18] On May 30, the initial sketch for Tsuina-chan's Synthesizer V design was released.[19] A livestream for Tsuina-chan was confirmed to be launching on November 26.[20]

On November 4, Tsuina-chan's website was updated and revealed her Synthesizer V design (later confirmed to be an alternative), which was noted as her "Diva Costume".[21] Two additional full-body illustrations were presented on Twitter, which were noted to be her Standard and AI designs respectively. Pre-orders launched on the same day and her release date was confirmed to be November 26.[22][23] According to her Synthesizer V character page on AH-Software's website, Lite versions were expected at a later date.[24] On November 12, a list of all the sound samples that were packaged in her Synthesizer V libraries was revealed.[25]

On November 19, both lite versions of the Standard and AI voice databases were made available.[26] On November 20, some users confirmed they received their boxes early.[27] Tsuina-chan was released on November 26 as intended.

2022[]

On March 25, 2022, after the implementation of Vocal Mode via Synthesizer V Studio Version 1.6.0., AH-Software announced that other AI voice libraries, such as Tsurumaki Maki, were planned to receive them.[28] On March 26, when discussing the request forms to submit to AH-Software, Tsuina-chan's Twitter suggested for fans to put in requests for Vocal Mode implementation.[29]

On June 30, it was announced that Tsuina-chan AI would be receiving a standalone physical package, which was expected to release on July 21, with pre-orders beginning on July 1.[30][31]

On July 21, Tsuina-chan AI was one of the AI voice databases to receive an update for HDVM compatibility (a feature introduced in Synthesizer V Studio Pro 1.7.0, also released the same day), as well as access to four new Vocal Modes including: Attacky, Breathy, Crispy, and Soft, respectively.[32]

However, some users complained about unstable voice-quality results when re-rendering in 1.7.0 projects saved under earlier versions of the editor that made use of her voice database (after updating it to v106). On July 22, Dreamtonics explained that by default, the AI Retakes feature favors "rich timbre and expressions over smooth and stable vocalization", resulting in inconsistent behavior relative to previous versions;[33] as a workaround to stabilize the voice output, both Dreamtonics and AH-Software offered these steps below:[34][35]

  • Empty the selection.
  • Open AI Retakes panel, go to Timbre tab.
  • Under Takes -> Global Settings, reduce Expressiveness.

Responding to requests from users, both Dreamtonics and AHS made available for download that same day rolled-back versions of Tsuina-chan AI (as well as other affected AI voice databases distributed by them) by logging in to their respective websites.[36][37]

Updates[]

Tsuina-chan AI v103 - December 23, 2021[38]

A free update for Tsuina-chan AI was released following the Synthesizer V Studio 1.5.0 update. This enables her to support cross-lingual singing synthesis.

Tsuina-chan AI v106 - July 21, 2022[39]

A free update for Tsuina-chan AI was released following the Synthesizer V Studio 1.7.0 update. This enables her to use the new High Dynamics Voice Models and AI Retakes features, as well as giving her access to the Vocal Modes feature from the 1.6.0 update. Her Vocal Modes are named Attacky, Breathy, Crispy, and Soft.

Tsuina-chan AI v104 - July 25, 2022[40]

A free downgrade for Tsuina-chan AI that removes HDVM compatibility, but retains the Vocal Modes introduced in v106.

Package details as noted:
Tsuina-chan is a young feminine vocal. According to AH-Software and Dreamtonics, she has a soft, crisp, and slightly husky tone. As an AI voice database, Tsuina-chan is capable of sounding more realistic and human-like.

Vocal traits as noted:
  • As of July 21, 2022, Tsuina-chan AI became compatible with the Vocal Mode function introduced in Synthesizer V Studio 1.6.0. Her v106 update included four variations: Attacky, Breathy, Crispy, and Soft. This function is only available in the Synthesizer V Studio Pro Editor.
    • This does not apply to the Lite version, thus restricting the voice database to default only.
  • As per the Synthesizer V Studio 1.7.0 update launched on July 21, 2022, through High Dynamics Voice Models (HDVM), AI voice databases may use AI Retakes to create multiple "takes" of a sung section with variations in pitch, dynamics, and timbre. This replicates the randomness of human vocalists, adds a more realistic feel, and allows users to find an ideal vocal without the need for "laborious tuning." This feature is only available in the Synthesizer V Studio Pro Editor.[43][44]
    • This does not apply to the Lite version.

Phonetic notes as noted:
  • A total of 317 additional sounds were specially recorded and included in the Tsuina-chan Synthesizer V package as uncompressed WAV files.[45]
  • Phoneme format: Romaji
  • On December 23, 2021, with the announcement of Synthesizer V Studio 1.5.0, all AI voice databases would be able to use cross-lingual singing synthesis. This allows Tsuina-chan AI to be able to sing in not only Japanese but also in English and Mandarin Chinese using this new feature, which is only available in the Synthesizer V Studio Pro Editor.[46]
    • This does not apply to the Lite version, thus restricting the voice database to Japanese only.
